We are getting into the best time of year for hiking – the fall!  Between the beautiful leaf-peeping and the cooler temperatures, it can be some of the best hiking weather and views of your life.  So, here are some tips for hiking from a Physical Therapist!

Hiking Tips from a Telehealth Physical Therapist

Bring a map

Always, and I repeat, always have access to a map.  I have switched to an electronic format and now I have AllTrails on my phone with a subscription.  But, you still need to download your maps while on wifi or decent cellular signal BEFORE you get to your hike.  Because if you have NO CELL SIGNAL, whoops, you are S.O.L. and don’t have a map.

Or, you can print a paper map or bring one with you.  I cannot tell you how many times having a map bailed me out of a wrong turn, or a poorly blazed trail.  And, having GPS on the phone, it can be pretty fool proof to help you if you are directionally challenged or don’t know how to use a compass or read terrain on a map.

    Bring simple first aid

If you become a serious hiker, or are a serious hiker, I guarantee you now wear a pack or a bag of some type.  Why?  You will hurt yourself on a hike if you haven’t already.  You may twist an ankle, snag your leg on a thorn, get stung by a bee, or have an ache/pain or headache that won’t go away.

I usually carry a few NSAID pills, an chemical ice pack (think pop the bubble pack), an ace bandage, bandaids, ointment, itch cream, etc.  And, for longer hikes, I make sure I have a whistle, emergency rescue blanket (looks like tin foil), matches/lighter, compass, etc.  This is in case we get hurt or lost, and may have to spend way more time than intended deep in the woods.

Thanks for listening!  Look out for Part 3: Shoes and Walking Sticks!
