We are getting into the best time of year for hiking – the fall! Between the beautiful leaf-peeping and the cooler temperatures, it can be some of the best hiking weather and views of your life. So, here are some tips for hiking from a Physical Therapist!

Hiking Tips from a Telehealth Physical Therapist
Wear proper shoes
Some people can get away with simple sneakers on a hike and I say KUDOS!!! I am not one of those people! I recommend proper hiking shoes. A stiffer sole helps you climb rocky hillsides, and appropriate support help keep your feet from wearing out too soon.
I have to wear a high ankle support to keep myself from busting an ankle. And, for water hikes, it never hurts to bring water shoes! And I mean the good ones, Merrel style with a sling back to keep them in place so you don’t slip or fall on a slick rock.

Use Trekking Poles or a walking stick
On the really steep climbs, as well as the really rocky ones, trekking poles or a walking stick can take you to the next level. It is an extension of your hand(s) to the ground and help steady you when your balance is tested to the max. And, the best part about using a walking stick on the trail, is that you can leave it for the next person!!
