Written: Can being Unhappy make you Physically Hurt?

We have all heard of dying from a broken heart.  A spouse dies after a deceased spouse not long after.  Or, a bonded pet passes not long after their beloved buddy.  Or, belly aching over something worrisome.  But, is this for real?

Let’s talk brain anatomy

The part of the brain that handles physical pain and right next to the spot that handles emotional pain.  They are literally like twins sharing the same crib.  These parts of the brain share the same pathways to suffering.  Your brain is literally using the same wiring for both emotional and physical pain.

Let’s talk chakras

Yep.  I am going there.  If you have ever dabbled in Yoga, they talk about energetic centers of your body.  They are stacked on top of one another from your bum (root chakra) clear up to the top of your head (your crown chakra).  These energy centers operate when they can flow freely.  However, when blocked (cue emotional pain), these chakras can become dysfunctional.  So, depending on the cause of the emotional pain (let’s use worry as an example), security and survival live in the root (rear end), self-worth and control live in the solar plexus (belly), and love/rejection live in the heart.  So, when any of these are affected (let’s say you are worrying over an outcome that you cannot control), you may feel physical discomfort in the that area (belly ache).  Take it, or leave it.  But this stuff has been around since the 6th century or so.

Let’s talk about happiness

So, depending on the root of the unhappiness, you may feel physical pain in that area.  Let’s say you are unhappy in love – you may feel that heaviness, tightness, or pain in your heart.  Maybe you are unhappy with a job because you can never speak up?  Your throat may chronically ache – or dare I say – you may develop an issue with your thyroid.  I didn’t make the rules!  I am just telling you what the rule maker’s said!  So, the answer is YES.  Unhappiness can make your body hurt.

Go out there and get googling if this interests you.  I think it is worth a pondering!
