Are you the one of 80% of people who will deal with low back pain at some point in your life? Then this might be for you!

I have often had people ask me why they have low back pain, especially in the absence of a specific injury. Over my years in practice, and dealing with back pain myself, I have one simple habit for you that contributes to low back pain.
It is your posture!
I know that sounds pretty anticlimactic, but it is true! Especially when you sit, because sitting puts the highest amount of pressure on the discs in your back. And if you slouch, especially for long periods of time, this pressure can quickly lead to a disc injury and leg pain. So, how can you improve this?

Think of your ear, shoulder, and hip in sitting. Start in a firmer chair (a soft and cozy couch will not work best for this). Scoot your butt to the back of the chair as far as it will go. If you do this, and your feet do not touch the ground anymore, then you need to lower the chair if it is adjustable OR you can put a small foot rest under your feet. Next, pretend you have a string at the top of your head and pulling you upward toward the ceiling. Like you are being pulled upward. Next, gently pinch your shoulder blades together and stick your chest out slightly. Finally, pull your chin underneath you. If you are in a good, neutral position, your ear, shoulder, and hips should be in a line.
If you find that your back is unable to rest against the backrest of your chair, then you likely need a lumbar support for the chair to keep you in this excellent position. If you sit at a desk for work, drive a car or truck for a living, or generally find yourself seated for much of the day, then you need this!
