Straight from the Mayo Clinic:

  • A muscle cramp is a sudden, unexpected tightening of one or more muscles. Sometimes called a charley horse, a muscle cramp can be very painful. Exercising or working hard, especially in heat, can lead to muscle cramps. Some medicines and illnesses also might cause muscle cramps.
  • Muscle cramps aren’t usually harmful. Self-care measures can treat most muscle cramps.
  • Muscle cramps occur mostly in leg muscles, most often in the calf. Cramps usually last for seconds to minutes. After the cramp eases, the area might be sore for hours or days.

One of the best things you can do if you get a cramp is to STAY CALM!

  • Try slow, deep, and gentle breathing. Try breathing in for a 1-2-3 count and out for a 1-2-3 count until you can feel your anxiety subsize and the cramp subside.
  • Try relaxing your entire body and melting into the chair you are sitting in or the bed you are laying in.
  • Remember that what you are feeling in this moment is temporary – it will not last!
  • Once you feel ready, try gently moving your foot (if a calf cramp) back and forth and up and down in a gentle motion until the cramp subsides.

Hope this helps everyone! Send me a message to request an appointment if you find yourself still struggling on your own!
